How Frequently Should You Change Spark Plugs?

How long your spark plug will last before requiring replacement depends on the type of spark plug as different types of spark plugs wear at different rates. Your vehicle owner’s manual will list the recommended replacement frequency which, on average, is around 30,000 miles.

However, a number of factors could affect how often you need to change worn spark plugs, including:

  • Type of spark plug: As previously mentioned, there are a number of different types of spark plugs. Some of these spark plugs are more durable than others, so the type you choose for your vehicle could affect how often you need to change them.
  • Driving habits: The way you drive could also impact how often you need to replace your spark plugs. Driving aggressively at high speeds will wear your spark plugs down faster.
  • Engine condition: The overall condition of your engine could impact the rate at which your spark plugs wear down. If you keep your engine in good condition, your spark plugs may last longer.

These are some of the many factors that could affect the frequency at which your spark plugs need to be replaced. Because of this, it’s important to remember that you may need to check the spark plugs more often than every 30,000 miles.
